Conservation, effective use and enhanced incomes from local endemic bio-resources in the tribal and cold desert areas of Panamik, Nubra, Leh (J&K)
Project goal- Basically the whole idea has been replicated from another SGP Grantee Partner (Jagriti) based in Kullu, Himachal Pradesh, after the exposure visit in Kullu by CENSFOOD. It is felt that CENSFOOD has much more scope for expansion and production of the products on apricot, rose hips and other medicinal plants. The project Goal is to ?Develop community led systems for conservation of the local resources, including rose hip, apricot and other medicinal plants in remote cold deserts?
Project objectives
? Creating women led community institutions for activities
? Conservation, sustainable harvesting and cultivation of Rose hip within the local systems in a sustainable manner.
? Establish a community led Rose hip processing centre for sustainable income generation of rural women
? Awareness and co generation of local oils from apricot, and other bio-resources with proper community management and establish a more community benefit sharing systems.
? Exposure and training of the tribal communities in the use of renewable systems and technologies for energy conservation and emission reduction.
Project activities
? Creating women self help institutions in 18 villages (1000 HHs) in Nubra Valley through PRA?s
? Conservation of native species in the natural growth tracts of Ladakh in villages.
? Establishment of local management committees, conduction of training, programs, skill building of SHG members to access & use renewable technologies through solar.
? Agricultural training camps with community and line department?s partnerships and establishing business enterprise for apricot processing; sea buckthorn; and Rose Hip.

Project Characteristics and Results
Capacity - Building Component
Exposure trips and trainings of the tribal communities in the use of renewable systems and technologies for energy conservation and emission reduction. Awareness and co-generation of local oils from apricot and other bio-resources with proper community management and establish more community benefit sharing system. Agriculture training camps will be organized for community and line department?s partnership and establishing business enterprise for apricot processing; see buck thorn; and rose hip. Training camps will be conducted with experts for locals on using the technologies. Members will be trained on book- keeping, monitoring, record maintenance, working capital etc for business enterprise.
Policy Impact
Links have been established with panchayat; line departments and hill council. The NGO is closely working with M.S.Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF), All India Disaster Mitigation Institute (AIDMI), Ahmadabad and National Foundation of India (NFI). Fodder and food security issues will be dealt with the help of these links. SHGs will be linked with various schemes of the LAHDC for better income and environment related actions. Facilitate interaction between locals and line department official through KVIC for introduction of Solar Charkhas for wool spinning and yarn making.
