Rainwater Harvesting to Address the Impact of Drought in Bouton, Saint Lucia.

This Planning grant is for a small community on the northern slopes of the Qualibou Caldera in Saint Lucia. The community has in the past suffered from water shortages and in adverse weather conditions their water supply are interrupted for very long periods. As the impacts of Climate Change continues, they expect their situation to worsen causing adverse impacts on households, agriculture and the health and education of the community.

This Planning Grant will help these communities to more thoroughly investigate their existing situation and with technical assistance design a water system which will ensure a sustainable supply of water over time. Their initial VRA score was 2.5.

Project Results

The project objectives included ascertaining and confirming the real demand for water for domestic and agricultural uses; designing a safe rain water harvesting system; increasing the community's awareness and knowledge of climate change; and building the capacity of the Bouton Community Development Committee.

The VRA Score (mean) at the commencement of the project was 2.5 with a range from 1 to 5 for the four variables. The community scored their lowest on the impact of water scarcity presently and the future impact of water scarcity due to climate change.

During project implementation the grantee had to shift the focus of the project from rehabilitating the water shed to rain water harvesting because the Government stated that they were in the planning stages of finding a new water source. This initiative is yet to materialize and the community thought at the time that the best option was to increase the rain water harvesting capacity of residents.

During project implementation the project employed two men and two women (Total income: US$3919) and trained 11 persons (6 women 5 men) in basic project management.

The project outputs were as follows: (i) The water needs of the community determined (supply was 28% below present demand); (ii) Rain water harvesting system designed and prepared for implementation; (iii) community?s awareness of the impact of CC increased significantly; (iv) capacity and capability of some members of the group in project management increased significantly; and the (v) Full Grant Project Proposal approved for implementation.
