The project aims at introducing and implementing sustainable natural resource consumption practice in the Paliastomi Lake and its basin and to preserve the ancient fishing net - Lazpor made by Kolkhi fishermen for fishing in the Paliastomi Lake.

Project Characteristics and Results

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Fishing has been the only source of income for the local population for thousands of years in Poti. Introduction and implementation of sustainable fishing practice supported by the project will significantly improve socioeconomic conditions of target communities and their families. up to 40 fishermen will be employed in the project.

Project sustainability

as a result of this project the traditional fishing practice will be maintained which will ensure sustainability of lake Paliastomi ecosystems.

Gender Focus

gender aspects are considered to be priority within the project. project main activities will be implemented by male participants but participation of females in project management will be the important factor to ensure successful implementation of the project. Within the project gender equality will be maintained among participants of educational and capacity building trainings and meetings. Women will be involved in sales of products and project management issues.

Notable Community Participation

local fishermen will be actively involved in project activities.

Capacity - Building Component

local fishermen will be actively involved in seminars and training through this activities their capacity in traditional fishing will be increased. in addition practically , by fishing with lazpory type of net they will get practice in sustainable fishing.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

project results will be broadcaster in local mas media, in addition several publication will be produced in local newspaper, that will assist locals awareness raising in sustainable fishing and Palastomi lake nature ecosystems conservation issues.

Project Results

2 fishermen brigades formed and socioeconomic conditions of 40 families has been improved
local fishermen?s awareness of traditional Kolkhi fishing methods raised and their capacity building ensured in this regard
traditional fishing net like Lazpori was produced and its production/usage technology maintained;
the Paliastomi Lake cleaned from things (rocks) thrown by poachers into it to attract fish.
bogging process significantly reduced as a result of cleaning the lake banks from organic remainders and water-plants by brigades
