The project was completed. The buildings have not been finished as plan, but part of the building has been used as plan; gives benefit for the students; the existence of dormitories and meeting hall improved the learning facilities for the farm-students.
This slightly unusual funding provided an excellent opportunity for GEF SGP to compare this type of activity with those of community-based, action oriented conservation efforts that are normally funded by the programme. Although SADAGORI?s activities are very similar to PUSLAWITA?s (in East Timor), each produced different reason on why projects such as this should be considered more seriously before selected by the NSC.
At the time of selection, the NSC was convinced that the relatively small grants would be sufficient to cover costs to build low-budget, simple yet structurally sound, buildings. But as was seen during a visit to the site in January 1996, all buildings did not seem to have met the NSC?s expectations (on being used). The buildings? deteriorated condition could be caused by among others (a) lack of supervision by management staff of SADAGORI during its construction, (b) the site plan was in-adequate, and (c) funds were being used to cover other programmes temporarily (causing a delay in the middle of construction work). Based on this experience, it is strongly suggested that projects such as this should not receive funding
