Investing in community institutions to promote forest conservation and enhance livelihoods in southern Aberdare (Kikuyu Escarpment forest)
The Kikuyu Escarpment Forests ecosystems supports national and rural livelihoods as they are critically important for water catchment, fuel wood, construction timber, herbal medicine, livestock grazing and cultural values. The forest also has tremendous potential for eco-tourism as they are scenically beautiful. However there are number of serious forest natural resources management problems including poaching of trees and overgrazing some damage and immense threat to the forest biodiversity.
In order to address some of the issues the forest is facing, the following objectives have been constructed:
The project goal is to ensure biodiversity and ecosystem values at Kikuyu escarpment are conserved and provide sustainable benefit. The project's broad objective is to ensure Implementation of the forest legislation by CFAs. This broad objective will be achieved through the following specific objectives:
To develop the capacities of Kikuyu Escarpment Community Forest Associations (CFAs) to co-manage the forest reserves with KFS for biodiversity conservation
To facilitate CFA participation in the county decision making policies to protect and conserve ecosystem and associated biodiversity
To popularize key potential ecotourism opportunities within Kikuyu escarpment Forest
To improve forest protection activities outlined in the management plan through simple monitoring
To develop managements for the two remaining forest blocks with the Kiambu County
