Secure Forest biodiversity protection for community adequate clean water supply in Tanna
Tanna island is a biodiversity hotspot in Vanuatu with 11 endemic plants found (UNDP land holders Project Report 2006) that have local use. Increasing population couple with the increase slash and burning of natural vegetation to gardening for food crops resulted unintentional removal of significant plants. The loss of forest and fallow period of gardening are becoming shorter each year is potentially leading to land degradation on the island. Many riverine streams in the island have drainage that have coverage of large part of forest land areas but due to the high due to loose soil structure that it limited to hold water at surface are shorter streams. Local people needed to be empowered to mainstreamed forest protection in their daily livelihood to support global biodiversity protection and mitigate climate change. Thus in Katalaei community, the project will continue to build local capacity for forest biodiversity protection through demonstration local protection of water catchment clean water supply for the local community. Knowledge generated will help build local knowledge on forest biodiversity in Tanna

Project Characteristics and Results
Policy Influence
The Vanuatu Environment Act 2002 provided for securing local land holders agreement for establishment and registration of community conservation areas of national biodiversity significance. The project providing securing water supply through gravity fed to the local community including the land holders as an incentive in securing local protection of the local native forest for watershed management and protection of 11 endemic plan species found in the natural forest of Tanna.
Project sustainability
The project is undertaken by the local CBO mainly based at the iin the island of Tanna.
