Alleviating Poverty and Food Insecurity through Urban Farming Projects
Vanuatu signed the convention on United Nations Convention on Combat of Desertification in 1999 to joined Global Action to reduce/eliminate threats to land desertification. Although Vanuatu has no desserts but the land threats caused by manmade and natural disaster are leading loss of land productivity. Agriculture is one of the main economy in Vanuatu. Majority of Vanuatu population engaged in subsistence farming. Clearance of natural forest and burning for planting food crops and established small holding cash crops with cattle. Without good understanding in land productivity and poor land use policies prime farm land are used unsustainable and they become abandoned and weed vested. The natural disaster had contributed in lessen land productivity. Severe floods caused landslides and runoffs to the marine areas. The Sea water intrusion into coastal areas reducing land mass areas and hence loss land productivity.
Man made factors include Local Subsistence gardening is the main farming system in Vanuatu. With the increasing population and urban development garden land areas have been reduced and that subsistence farming re shifted into the marginal areas. The steep upland areas and watershed areas are increasingly cultivated for food crops. The local communities in some high populated areas there is shorter fallow period gardening.
The project will build local women farmers on land prouductivity and sustainable management while addressing food security.
