Enhancing Mangrove and Coral Ecosystems via Active Reforestation/Restoration Efforts and Structured Training Activities in the Stann Creek District
The goal of this project is to reduce impending threats of climate change by enhancing the ecosystems that provide the most shoreline protection (mangroves and coral reefs) to coastal communities near Laughing Bird Caye National Park (LBCNP), part of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System-World Heritage Site (BBRRS-WHS). These communities include the entire Placencia peninsula (Placencia, Seine Bight, Maya Beach, Riversdale), and Independence and Monkey River Village. This goal relates directly to COMPACT?s second objective in their Site Strategy: to promote the protection, conservation and sustainable resources of the BBRRS-WHS by community groups, community based organizations and the general public. It meets three of the sub-objectives (2.1, 2.2 and 2.4) by training stakeholder communities on existing protocols for mangrove reforestation and coral restoration, which includes existing best practices, applies new management strategies and monitoring programs and training/teaching materials for both programs.
This project also directly meets COMPACT?s third site strategy objective, ?to develop and/or enhance the management capacities of the community groups who use and impact the resources of the BBRRS-WHS as well as those who participate in co-management of the protected areas? since participants in the project will include tour guides, fisher folk, NGO and the Belize Fisheries Department staff.

Project Characteristics and Results
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
Communication of project results will be shared via the local monthly Placencia newspaper, the Breeze, which is also published online. Other internet forums such as the social media website Facebook pages for Fragments of Hope, SEA and the Placencia Tour Guide Association will be updated regularly with photographs and information throughout the project implementation time frame. Fragments of Hope, Ltd. members and/or project participants may also appear on local radio or TV programs during or after the project implementation. Results (number and survivorship of either or both mangroves and corals planted) could potentially be disseminated via the University of Belize?s annual Natural Resource Symposium, dependent on the timeframe of the projects? completion.
Policy Influence
No. On a national and international scale, decision-makers are showing more interest in promoting ecosystem-based approaches to climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction, therefore, the project outcomes will remain relevant in the near future. The partnerships established between FoH and CZMAI, Belize Fisheries Department and Department of Environment will help to facilitate the sharing of and incorporating of project outcomes into national development plans or government policy.
