Project Characteristics and Results

Project sustainability

- Commercial contacts were establishd with stores in the capital Salvador and other important touristic cities of the region in order to continue marketing after project conclusion.

Capacity - Building Component

Creative workshops on local and traditional craft skills, courses on solidarity economy, collective planting and catalog elaboration for sustainable management of local species.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Dissemination of results by means of meetings with all members of the community , in addition to other activities will contribute to this project component.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Generation of income for rural communities by means of use of native species carried out with full respect for plant ecology and aimed at local development is a sustainable livelihood promoting conservation of biodiversity

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

Management techniques will be proposed based on data acquired by the studies, which will hopefully ultimately become public policy. Support for the project involves environmental agencies at the state and federal level

Notable Community Participation

The project will include 08 families from the Corcovado quilombola community. The activities involved will assist benefit families through capacity building in artisanal work in order to create a sustainable development of handicrafts and solidary practices.

Project Results

- 14 families were benefitted by the project, 18 women participated on capacity building activities;
- Several capacity building activities regarding the improvement of the handicraft were developed fduring the projects: vegetal paper and banana fiber; licuri fiber; cipó; sewing; marketing; entrepreneurship; fair trade; design and Excel;
- 11 people learned about agroecology through a permanent capacity building process - 11ha are being managed by agroecological principles;
- Handicraft house were build and a dry bathroom;
- The project increased community self steem because they started to recognize and to earn money by their work as artisans;
- In partnership with Bahia Federal Institute and ICMBio (Brazilian Institution for Protected Areas) a management plan for licuri and cipó, the species used to make handicraft, were developed;
- Website, catalogs and tags were produced ;
- During the project the products were sold in several fair and meeting, generating a total income of USD2,000;
Now the community has a beautiful store in the main square of Palmeiras, BA, a strategic place to show their product to the numerous tourists that cross the city in their way to Chapada Diamantina National Park.
