Empowering Special Needs and Socially Marginalized Youth Towards Eco-Friendly Activities by Y Generation Sri Lanka.

Develop economically visible gardens in the National Institute of Mental Health Hospital premises, Chitra Lane School and Southern Province Deaf Association. Establish butterfly gardens and develop capacity to generate an income in all three locations.

Capacity - Building Component

NGO staff is trained on project management, M&E, office management, EIA mechanism, local and global environmental issues and related conventions, business plan developments etc.The project is planning to conduct training programmes to the youths on organic farming, waste management, make recycled paper, soap letters and exercise books. project starts to train selected youth on sign language.NIMH on mental disorders and horticulture therapy is promoted

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project aims to train these youths in various suitable skills. These skills will benefit them to make their income generations .100 home gardens will be established associated with southern deaf association which will generate income to the community

Notable Community Participation

The project is focused on deaf, mental retarded and special needy disabled youths in three different locations. Nearly 150 persons from the community directly participated/benefited from the project

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The youths who are voluntarily working in the project are well aware of the national and global environment issues, They are involved in conducting awareness programmes to the general public and school children

Policy Impact

project promotes organic faming especially among special youth groups. This concept can be joined to the National organic farming promotion programme.

Project Results

Organic home gardening which was the main project activity, provided diverse benefits to the differently abled youth and their families. It provided both beneficiaries and volunteers with the opportunity to learn to maintain a productive garden with the use of organic compost and fertilizer for which training was provided. The crops grown in home gardens were either sold to earn an income or used for consumption.

The rapport building and interaction with the volunteers provided a good opportunity for the beneficiaries in all three locations to experience interaction with outsiders previously unknown to them, which is an integral step in learning to function independently.

The volunteers too who had no prior experience working with the differently abled, understood the baselessness of the stigma attached to such persons, through interactions. They have now become advocates for the differently abled encouraging fellow youth volunteers to appreciate such persons for their different abilities.
