Building Local Capacity in Farmers in Sustainable Development in the Borden-Peter’s Hope Area, While Preventing Soil-Loss & Flooding”
Nyahbinghi Order of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Unlike other projects this project addresses and opportunity.
The increasing demand for local organic foods in St Vincent and the Grenadines presents an opportunity for a reexamination of the agricultural systems and for farmers to learn new methods of farming that are in harmony with the environment. It also affords an opportunity for consumers to become aware of the results of their choices not only on their health but also on the environment.
The project fulfills the outcome 9.1 of the GEF Small Grants Programme namely ?Significant increase awareness of chemical pollution and alternatives to agro-chemical use. It will build the local capacity of farmers in the Borden Peter?s Hope Areas to conduct agriculture with reduced pesticides.

The primary objectives of the project included the following:

1. To establish a viable inclusive demonstration and training site on sustainable agricultural practices including the production and acquisition of organic fertilizer and the experimentation with natural and biological control methodology and document success

2. To Train 60 farmers and 35 households in a 6 month period on sustainable agricultural practices and organic backyard gardening.

3. To educate various stakeholders including 100 farmers and 50 households in the surrounding villages on the benefits and methods of organic agriculture in order to create local awareness of the link between environmental health, food quality, personal health and diseases and the increase use of agro-chemicals.
