Project Characteristics and Results

Gender Focus

Equal employment opportunities will be provided to men and women (50/50) to work in the garden within the project. Garden restoration work will be distributed between men and women according to their physical abilities and not the gender. Economic resource ?employment will be available. Accordingly, both, men and women will get equal social benefits. Social responsibilities will be equally distributed between men and women. Exercising women?s ecological rights will be supported. The restored Botanical Garden will equally be available for men and women. All community members will get equal benefits: oxygen-rich environment, improved microclimate in the center of the town and esthetic pleasure.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The awareness of global environment among the youth involved in the project will be improved. They will participate in the week dedicated to the World Environment Day, etc. Logo design contest for the Zugdidi Botanical Garden will be announced to increase the young people?s interest in ecological problems. The improvement of level of ecological culture of the population will be supported.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Within the project 5 workplaces were created through which the community get social benefits. Tourism potential in Zugdidi will be increased.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

facebook was used as a tool for sharing project activities, active PR campaign with local media involvement were lunched for knowledge management, public result summary brochure were pronted and distributed among locals.

Planning non gef grant

government of Georgia plans to invest 3 million GEL for Zugdidi botanical garden infrastructure rehabilitation.

Project sustainability

seedlings from nursery are used as a restoration of the garden area, also for sale, the proceeds will be used for the care and maintenance of the garden.

Capacity - Building Component

within this project we will acquire project management experience and experience in cooperation with the local government. Due to the fact that former employees will work for the garden, they will share their experience and knowledge with the staff members of Zugdidi Improvement Service as a result of which a group of professional gardeners will be established who will have gardening skills. Environmental skills and knowledge of the youth involved in the project will be improved. We will acquire public campaign skills that will be used to implement future activities. Volunteerism will be promoted in the community. Philanthropy will be promoted in the community: community activities, working for the garden rescue foundation, etc.

Project Results

following results has been achieved:
- community involvement in Zugdidi Botanical Garden restoration activities was increased
- initiative group to save the garden was set up and Garden restoration foundation was established
- old sapling nursery of the Botanical Garden was restored
- endemic and exotic species of Zugdidi Botanical Garden up to 30 plant species was conserved
- 240 trees of 17 varieties of plants replanted in 2000 square meters of auxiliary nursery
- E-catalogue and inventory of the garden plants was made which describes a total of 20 723 plant template
