“Restoration of 100 hectares of degraded lands in Kara-Bulun Bay of Issyk-Kul Region and conservation of endemic species of fruit and berry plants through the introduction of drip irrigation and dissemination practices of sustainable agriculture among local farmers”.

The overall objective of the project is to restore 100 hectares of degraded land in Peninsula Kara-Bulun in Issyk-Kul and conservation of endemic varieties of fruit crops through the establishment of the nursery, the introduction of drip irrigation and dissemination practices for sustainable agriculture and local farmers.

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

40 low-income families from Dzhetioguz district will be trained about agro ethnic eco-tourism Planned opening for conducting comprehensive training for the development of agro ethnic eco-tourism "green" business.

Policy Impact

During the implementation of the project there will be involved the Head of Zhetioguz forestry, the Head of Kyzyl Suu State Agency and representatives of Zhetioguz district youth leaders and women's councils in the region.

Replication of project activities

Local farmers and farmers from different regions of Kyrgyzstan visit "Kainar Bulak" with educational and experience exchange purposes. Many of them also became intrested in use of the himic asides for raising soil fertility.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Open ceremony and press-tour was organized in cooperetion with "Kumtor" Cold company on 10 October 2015. news about project was covered in mass-media.

Project sustainability

Project is sustsainable, as jammat is able to sell fruits from the created agricultural area, and also they have started agroecotourism, which brings additional funds.

Policy Influence

The proejct influenced both at the local and reginal levels, as the project area of drip irrigation (30 hectares) became the largest area of drip irrigation in the country.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project involves the local population, local authorities. Local MPs has adopted a strategy for the development of ecological village of Kyzyl Suu until 2025.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The project involves the poor and the young families of the Issyk-Kul region. They have the ability to conduct eco-tours in the coastal zone of the Issyk-Kul region.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

The project issued a leaflel about drip irrigation. Joint video about saving endemic fruit trees in Issyk-Kul was prepared with jammat "Dastan".

Gender Focus

The project leaders will involve youth committees and women's councils in the region.

Notable Community Participation

The project promotes environmental awareness of the local community and the principles of sustainable agriculture. As a result of this project there will be planted and grown more than 10,000 seedlings of apple and pear trees in the territory of 30 hectares where local community will be involved.

Project Results

1. Project management comittee was created, consisting of zhaamat "Kaynar Bulagy"'s members and representatives of Kyzyl Suu and Dzheti-Oguz district administration.
2. Representatives of the young families Dzheti-Oguz area were trained to fruit growing and drip irrigation.
3. Demonstration nursery for growing seedlings of endangered endemic strong-fruit crops was created.
4. On 30 hectares of land Jamaat constructed drip irrigation system for the garden to save endangered endemic varieties of fruit and berry crops in Issyk-Kul oblast. Through the Kumtor Gold Company 20 containers were obtained (as co-financing). The material of the containers was used for the construction of concrete water tank, which is then distributed to drip irrigation.
5. 100 hectares of Kara Bulunpeninsula of Issyk-Kul were protected from further degradation by creating of ??windbreaks, consisting of local and thorny bushes growing.
6. A booklet about the method of drip irrigation to grow strong-endemic Issyk-Kul varieties of fruit plants was developed and published .
7. Exhibition of drip irrigation was created on the base of the museum in Balykchy town.
8. By "ashar" (community help) method jamaat Kainar Bulagy create an area for tourists (yurts, pavilions, a place for cooking, toilet, shower, parking). It is located near nursery and aimed to promote rural tourism.
9. A stand about project was located near the road.
10. A village meeting was organized, where the results of the project on the peninsula Kara Bulun were presented.
