Promoting sustainable land management among recently settled internally displaced persons
Melwa Community Development project is a programme based in Melwa location of Muhotetu division, Laikipia west sub-county in Laikipia County. The project is aimed at reducing pressure on Rumuruti and Marmanet forests by the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) settled in the location as well as poverty reduction. Project Characteristics and Results
Gender Focus
In Laikipia County, like in many other counties, women are a marginalized group. Vijana Pamoja gives a keen look and in spirit and letter of our constitution we carry out all our activities with a lot of sensitivity to this fact.
First, the group membership is composed of 70% women, the young women being our main focus.
Most of the activities are intended to lessen the burden the women carry e.g. energy saving jikos, access to water and the kitchen gardens make them the core beneficiaries.
The project will ensure that both men and women take the centre stage since environment conservation is every member of the society?s duty and responsibility.
Notable Community Participation
The development of this project has been a consultative process since inception. Members of different interest groups and ethnicity from the target area in the location were brought together to share their needs. Project Implementation committee of 6 women and 4 men respectively and a coordinator were selected. Community and opinion leaders were fully involved during this process. A participatory problem analysis in the area with the help of the local resource persons from the Ministry of Agriculture and Kenya Forest Services was done and a community action plan developed and priority areas earmarked for quicker intervention. Adequate sensitisation meetings to the stakeholders and the public within and outside the location will be conducted. This project is a continuation of other projects. These include the County integration Development Plan. The implementation of the project will involve the local groups to ensure that it addresses their needs.
