Njuri High School biogas project: an alternative source of renewable energy
This proposal aims to provide a practical solution to the fuel problem in Njuri Boys Secondary School through installation of a biogas plant within the institution to provide cooking and lighting energy.
Njuri Boys High School is a Boarding school established 40 years ago with a population of 800 Boys, 41 teaching staff and 28 non-teaching staff .The school is located on 30 acre piece of land. The school depends on firewood fuel as the main source of cooking fuel. The reduction in fire wood consumption due to the use of the biogas plant means that the school can reduce this expense signification hence investing in other school development activities.
This project was arrived at after the school Board of Governors discovered they were spending a lot of money in purchasing firewood. The school buys four lorry of firewood for each term translating to 25 tons of firewood which is equivalent to 50 mature trees.
The school will install biogas digester in the school to provide fuel for the school and also serve as a demonstration or pilot training projects for other schools in the region. The other economic benefit that will be generated by this project will be reduction of uncontrolled forest cutting and thereby mitigating the risks of climate change.

Project Characteristics and Results
Notable Community Participation
In any school development project such as this biogas technology, parents, students, teachers and other stake holders including the local people are informed of the school intention to implement the project to ensure their participation. Part of the community contribution must be sourced from the parents, local community and other agencies such as the sponsoring agency. It?s very imperative to involve these stakeholders from the early stages of project planning to ensure participation and involvement in the project implementation
The community is anticipated to participate in conservation efforts through initiating woodlots in their farms
Capacity - Building Component
In biogas technology projects such as this one, local technician from the community will be involved who will be guided by experts from the technical team of the contractor. Most of the manual work will be sourced from the community. This approach will enable the team to train and to transfer knowledge to the local technicians. The newly learned and developed skills will serve the technicians and their communities as well as guarantee full participation by the community. The project will train two technicians for operation and maintenance of the project after the project is complete and handed to the school
