The project was completed. Further statistical analysis may be needed to confirm the data, but it would appear that there has already a significant financial benefit for those who participated in the project. This is illustrated by the money spent on maintaining the fields against the price of their rice yields in the market. With the insignificant difference in the yields per acre, the difference in expenses attracted more interest from other farmers. With training farmers to be future trainers, it is hoped that these farmers will be able to provide similar training in other areas with a minimum amount of PAN?s assistance. This rippling effect would serve not only to promote IPM and to return to environmentally safe farming methods, but more importantly to return local varieties of cash crops (as opposed to hybrids). A number of local farmers have - on their own initiatives - set aside a small piece of their cultivated land to experiment IPM on other cash crops such as red chili pepper and green beans.
Lesson-learned that could be taken: the project also produced a unique output: improved courage to appear and give a presentation to the public. As a result of this improved individual confidence, previously ?quiet? community members have come to join the local election campaign for the Head of the Village position.
Government linkage in this program would be appreciated, as the government is currently intensifying the ?urea tablet? program for farmers. This linkage would be useful for future projects of this kind, especially if the market potentials for IPM?s yields are to be explored and developed.
