Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Conservation of tank forest reserves and rehabilitation of tanks would minimize the water scarcity. This would enable the farmers to cultivate in the dry seasons. Traditional rice varieties will be promoted among the farmers which would be a sustainable income source.Traditional rice marketing program will be initiated. Traditional handicraft production from reed will be promoted for women as a sustainable livelihood. Two organic fertilizer production units will be established based on the youth entrepreneurship

Project sustainability

Irrigation engineers of Anuradhapura district continuously helped with the technical advice's to the project. A training to the dairy farmers and a training to make milk toffees were given by Vidatha institute. Also the institute gave agriculture training.

Capacity - Building Component

Local community will be educated about the importance of conservation of tank forest reserves. Villagers will be empowered to acquire illegally encroached lands of the tank catchment areas. Training programs will be organized to promote traditional rice varieties and non agrochemical farming.

Notable Community Participation

The project focuses on a community based approach for the conservation of biodiversity of the tank forest reserves. Community is directed to conserve the remaining tank forest reserves in their village while taking steps to acquire illegally captured lands of the tank catchment areas and replanting suitable trees to increase the forest cover.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Workshops and training programs will be organized for the villagers to raise awareness about the adverse effects of deforestation and methods to recover the damage caused to the tank based ecosystems.

Project Results

Boundaries of two lake reserves were marked.
Water hyacinth plants were removed in the lakes.
The eroded areas of tank bunts were repaired.
The temple premises about 3 acres were constructed into a medicinal plant garden.
A book was published regarding the lake reserves in the area and built a conservation process.
About 80 agricultural tools were distributed.
Soil and water conservation methods were established in about 40 acres.
Eco friendly agriculture was started in 40 acres.
The seed bank was established.
About 1.5km long, both sides in alimankada, row of repulsion plants were planted.
The committee of native dairy farmers was established.
