Survey On Bush Meat Trade in Grand Gedeh County
1.1 Project Summary
This project proposed to conduct Survey on Bush Meat Trade in Grand Gedeh County four (4) communities ( Sanniewen, Jabo, Boundary Town and Zwedru ). The target groups are hunters and market women. This program, when implemented will serve as a milestone in the sustainable management of the forest, particularly the wildlife protection of Grand Gedeh County.
Bush meat trade seems to be on a rapid increase in Grand Gedeh County, and the County plays host to the Sapo National Park and forms common boundary with the Tai National Park in Ivory Coast. Since Grand Gedeh is between these two important biodiversity areas, the hunters make Grand Gedeh a commercial hunting zone. Bush meat trade is becoming very alarming and there is a need to put in place some strategies to reduce the rate at which the animals are killed. Bush meat is sold daily in high quantity in Jabo, Sanniewen, Boundary Town and Zwedru. This means that there is a threat to the Sapo National Park and wildlife in Liberia.
The threat posed to the wildlife and potential flagship species establishes the need to conduct a survey to determine the hunting rate and create effective conservation awareness to reduce the threat.
This project seeks to conduct a survey while sensitizing both hunters and marketers.
