Restoration of Degraded Lands through Reforestation, agro-biodiversity enhancement and Sustainable Livelihood enterprise development in Logba Alakpeti, Zokpe Old Town and Zokpe New Town portion of the WETO COMDEKS Landscape
1 Problem Statement:
Economic activities such as logging, fuel production and farming have become the main causes of forest loss at the Lobga Alakpeti, Zokpe Old Town and Zokpe New Town. In the case of logging, significant amount of it is done illegally and often done with little consideration on the environmental damage it causes. Farming methods in Lobga Alakpeti, Zokpe Old Town and Zokpe New Town have not seen any significant transformation for a long time. Most farmers still practice slash and burn methods while the use of obsolete farming implements remains.
The results of these environmental challenges have been increasing loss of biodiversity, land degradation and widespread poverty. Generally, the uses of resources in the landscape are unsustainable with increasing use of agrochemicals, cultivation of lands along the water courses, streams drying up, reduction in soil fertility, rarity and loss of flora and fauna, and increasing erosion.
The rate at which the area is losing its natural resources owing to human activities raises concern about the sustainable exploitation of these resources. The main challenges facing the area are the weak institutional capacity for environmental management, and the limited resources, both human and financial, to implement reforestation and other environmental management programmes.
By strengthening biodiversity management, both within and beyond the protected areas, the project will aim to improve resource management and local livelihoods, mainstream biodiversity conservation in production areas, and protect biological corridors and eco-sensitive areas within the broader production landscapes. The project would dwell on development of methodologies and tools, capacity and skills, and documentation and dissemination of best practices.
2.2 Project Objectives
The overall goal of the project is to develop and promote new models of conservation at the landscape scale through enhanced capacity and institutional building for mainstreaming biodiversity conservation outcomes. Specifically, the project will seek:
1. To promote the conservation of natural and semi?natural habitats and ecosystem services within Weto landscape
2. To promote sustainable organic agricultural practices across the landscape to enhance and revive traditional conservation and production practices and adoption of new technologies.
3. To develop livelihood and wellbeing of target social groups within Weto Landscape sustained and enhanced through the development of livelihood enterprises in line with local tradition and culture.
FIRST QUARTER REPORT
