Sustainable Management of Plastic Waste and Increased Livelihoods for Sarthak Karmis (SKs) in partnership with Bhopal Municipal Corporation
The project aims at increasing socio-economic status of 2000 rag pickers and improve plastic waste management in 70 wards of Bhopal Municipal Cooperation.
Project Objectives:
1. Develop a sustainable system for proper plastic waste management in 70 wards of Bhopal, ensuring the co processing of plastic waste.
2. Increase socio-economic status of 2000 rag pickers families.
3. Establishing vermi-composting and paper bag and cotton making unit.
4. Making Bhopal a plastic free city as a sustainable model.
The project activities will be carried out in a phased manner to ensure that set targets are achieved within the stipulated time frame. Door to Door collection of household waste will be institutionalized in 35 wards of Bhopal.
The project will develop mechanisms for door to door collection of non- biodegradable waste and introducing measures for handling of non- biodegradable waste, including compression of plastic and transportation for recycling.

Project Characteristics and Results
Inovative Financial Mechanisms
Both print and audio visual media will be used to promote the activities of the project. The project will be widely covered through newspapers and television. A number of write ups about the project will be printed in both local as well as national newspapers. Press releases will be made for important activities. The project will seek assistance of the media in conducting rallies, street plays, exhibitions, public meeting and seminars.
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
Orientation will be provided to the staff regarding the project objectives and activities regarding waste management. Regular workshops, meetings and discussions will be organized with BMC, RWAs, SPCB and other bodies. Proper strategies will be developed regarding the plastic waste management. Rag pickers federation will be formed at project level. Project will constitute a project steering committee containing 10-12 members to review the progress of the project.
