An Alternative Approach to Sustainable Plastic Waste Management and Resource Enterprise
The project aims at developing sustainable solutions to re-cycle waste in Bodhgaya and sanitation builds in 6 surrounding villages to reduce green house gas, to decrease environmental damage (re-fuse) and create jobs for the local community (re-use).
Project Objectives:
1. To reduce waste and environmental degradation by setting up a recycling and eco training centre, demonstrating good practice in the disposal and sustainable management of plastic waste.
2. To raise awareness of and resolve the issues by developing systems for training and educating local people in identified courses relating to the eco- centre's activities.
3. To create job and business opportunities for local people through acquired skills in all aspects of sustainable and eco friendly waste management and related activities to alleviate poverty.
4. To increase mindfulness towards environmental issues in the community by motivating behavioral change among young people through education and training.
Project Activities:
1. More than 40 women from Dalit community and more than 30 men agreed to being involved and support the project.
2. The 70 plus village women are already working on the current sewing project will support the project by sewing the bags and for making the blocks.
3. 4 full time persons will be employed for the recycling centre and 8 full time plus 2 part time machine operators (each machine requires 2 operators at the same time), 6 full time plus 4 part time on the construction team and 18 full time and 6 part time staff will also be required.
4. Training and consultancy, awareness programs will mainly be designed and supported by volunteers from relevant professional backgrounds.
Project Outcomes:
1. Increased proportion of plastic collected, washed and compressed using low technology solutions.
2. Establishment of a Recycling centre and a community based Eco Training Centre.
3. Construction of amenities identified by the community after the research and development phase to test the compressed plastic building material on durability and adaptation to local conditions.
4. Number of jobs created.
5. Through consultation, an understanding of the needs of the community.
