Technology Demonstration and Capacity building in Energy Saving Rural Jaggery making systems using scientifically improved 3 Pan System of Jaggery.

Project Objectives:
1. Install improved Energy Saving 3 pan Jaggery Furnace (and improved sugarcane crushers if and where desired by entrepreneurs at their own costs) as demonstration unis in existing (retro-fitted) or new rural jaggery units in geographically well- distributed locations in different district of western Uttar Pradesh, Uttrakhand, Haryana Haryana and relevant neighbouring part of Punjab and Rajasthan where 3 pan systems are in vogue.
2. demonstrate and popularize energy saving jaggery systems by showcasing its benefits through show and tell visits by other jaggery entrepreneurs/operators from surrounding villages to demonstration units.
3. build capacities of local NGOs and young entrepreneurs in construction of energy saving jaggery furnaces for income generation and wider technology dissemination and popularization.
4. catalyze institutional financial support structure/mechanisms through xo-financing loans etc to assist wider adoption of the new technology.
5. substantially increase incomes of rural jaggery makers, improve working conditions in rural jaggery units, recycle saved bagasse for other economically useful purposes (such as paper/cardboard), save considerable energy and green house gas emissions.

1. Construction of 50 new design Furnaces.

Project Outcomes:
1. Energy Efficient Furnace: The horizontal furnace with chimney at one end is remodeled with new internal geometry for more efficient and uniform heat flow. Better but cost- effective insulation for conservation of heat in furnace will be provided.
2. Awareness Generation: The Coordinated Program shall spread awareness of the new technology and demonstration benefits in selected relevant clusters so that the entire area is influenced.
3. Capacity Building among NGOs: Build capacities among NGO partners and entrepreneurship so that further dissemination is promoted.

Project Characteristics and Results

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

A multi agency workshop would be organized by CTD/SESS to discuss outcomes of and lessons from the project and share their experiences regarding the same.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

A small brochure in Hindi on the new Furnace would be prepared and printed to assist the people and the project activities. Videos and printed matter will also be available on www.ctdsess.in.

Policy Impact

During the project the NGO will link with relevant Development Agencies and Financial Institutions to catalyze the schemes that would assist in wider dissemination of energy saving furnace. Links will also be established with NABARD and other departments such as State Council of Science & Technology, State level departments of Rural development, Social Welfare Environment etc. The Government will take initiatives to replicate this technology in the area where 3 Pan Jaggery systems are in use.

Gender Focus

Even though the project is male dominated efforts will be made to catalyze and promote women?s participation throughout all the activities of the project. Women will be actively involved during the process of training and capacity building sessions. Community will be actively involved in promoting involvement and participation of jiggery makers as well as of masons, other young entrepreneurs and local NGOs.

Capacity - Building Component

Exposure visits will be organized for jaggery making entrepreneur/ operator to each demonstration unit to see and learn about the new furnace and experience, its energy saving performance etc. Local masons, NGOs and young entrepreneurs will be motivated to participate and trained in construction of the new design furnace. Hands on training will also be given to them under CTD/SESS supervision during subsequent Furnace construction.

The beneficiaries are not indigenous community.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project aims at technology demonstration and capacity building in energy saving rural jaggery making systems in selected clusters in North India states using 3 Pan Systems. Local entrepreneurs/ NGOs could earn supplementary incomes by charging fees for constructing new energy efficient Jaggery furnaces with the help of local masons. Improved crushers will be introduces along with improved furnace for income generation and energy saving qualities. 50 new design Jaggery furnaces will be constructed in the area of project implementation.

Notable Community Participation

The project will build capacities of local NGOs and young entrepreneurs in construction of energy saving Jaggery furnaces for income generation and wider technology dissemination.

Project Results

? Installation of energy efficient technologies for jaggery making helped the beneficiaries reduce 22% of fuel consumption
? Additional incomes of around 1,00,000 INR per annum was generated by the sale of saved bagasse to cardboard and paper industry. This also saved the man hours which was previously required for construction of furnace every season.
? Specific fuel consumption (SFC) has been reduced as depicted in the graph. In addition to this, 3-pan furnace saves 0.64 tons of CO2 emission per day and 4-pan furnace saves 0.49 tons of CO2 emission per day.
? The installation of 15 new 3-pan and 4-pan furnace has helped in reducing the carbon emission by 52.8 tons per year per furnace cumulating to a total of 792 tons per year.
? As the technology popularizes, trained masons are receiving more return orders and hence greater stability in the incomes and livelihood sustenance.
? 13 local masons have been trained till date and CTD aims to familiarize them with the procurement of insulating bricks.
? The exposure visits and demonstrations has helped in eradicating various myths like more smoke means better jaggery. More awareness has been created amongst the beneficiaries.
? Further linkages were established with BMR Academy, Gurukul Jaryanpur, Haryana Vigyan March and Bharat Gyan Vigyan Samiti for technology popularization support. Linkages are established with State Councils for Science and Technology for supporting financially for the construction of new furnaces.
