Persistent Organic Pollutants have not been properly monitored in the Republic of Palau. One of main reasons that there has not been proper analysis is the lack of proper facilities on island for analysis. POPs analysis has been a continued concern for the region due to past and present pesticide use and improper waste management in the region.

In order to properly address POPs in Palau, scientific research capacity in Palau must be assessed to determine whether analysis for the POPs in Palau, and possibly the region, can be done in Palau. Prior to that it is important to raise awareness for decision makers and educate the population through workshops and dissemination of knowledge on the dangers of POPs and proper prevention and mitigation methods for the disposal or treatment of POPs. The work set forth in this project will help to phase out Persistent Organic Pollutants through creating awareness and assessment identification methods for POPs.
