Tapa making and tree planting
Tapa making and tree planting
Women committee of Vailoa village based on the Island of Savaii are seeking support on preserving traditional knowledge of using the mulberry or lau u'a tree in Samoan. Tapa is the traditional Samoan cloth in ancient times and is still the core of culture and traditions though these clothing are only worn during special traditional occasions. The lau u'a tree in the village has completely vanished due to natural cyclones and roaming pigs consumption. The women group are proposing to replant the lau ua and reserve the area/plant using a wetland area of more than 10 acres that is degraded and needing plants not just the lau ua but other traditional plants that needs to be grown to preserve the area. The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MNRE) will be one of the community partners who will be conducting awareness programmes on how to conserve the wetland area and the importance of tree planting to adapt to impacts of climate chage. At the same time, women empowerment through economic welfare through making tapa and selling it would be another aspect that other potential partners are expected to support the women committee to ensure that there is a equal balance of conservation of their environment and economic welfare/livelihood. A planning grant is awarded to the grantee-partner for workshops and awareness raising.
