Project Characteristics and Results

Gender Focus

Both women and men will be equally involved into the project. A special attention is made on women, as there are many teachers among them, and work with teachers is one of the main tasks of thie project.

Capacity - Building Component

Consultation of the thematic experts (botanist, ornitologists, specialist on mammals, etc) will be provided to the grantee during the project. This is necessary in the process of publication development.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Educational modules of the training events includes such practices, as drip irrigation, creation of the microreserves on protection of wild nature, use of the renewable energy, agroecology, etc.

Planning non gef grant

Information campaign on biodiversity conservation are planned to be conducted by the State Agency on nature protection and Union of the photo journalists in the other provinces of Kyrgyzstan.

Replication of project activities

Manual on ecoeducation for school of Issyk-Kul province, issued within the proejct, is now widely distributed in other regions of Kyrgyzstan. There are plans of the several national agencies to develop such a manual for each province of Kyrgyzstan.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

Project materials are expected to be developed both in Russian and Kyrgyz languages.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The project includes special events wirh mass-media.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

The project includes trainings, public events and publication development components. Issueing of the special mannual on protection of the Issyk-Kul's nature will be widely distributed in all schools of Issyk-Kul province.

Notable Community Participation

The project is aimed to raise quality of the environmental education in school of Issyk-Kul province. To reach this purpose educational events for teachers and youth groups will be conducted in more then 10 pilot schools , located in the villages and cities around the Issyk-Kul lake.

The project is link with larg GEF project on creation Han-Tegri national park, realized by UNDP

Policy Influence

The project is lobbying the practice on public microreserves creation arounf the Issyk-Kul with a special accent on sea buckthorn bushes on the beach of the Issyk-Kul lake, playing a role of the natural filter of the lake's waters.

Project sustainability

The project is sustainable, as changes are made on the level of school curricula.

Project Results

1. The committee of management of the project where representatives of "Aleine" PA, representatives of GEF SGP, experts-ecologists, representatives of the State protection areas in Issyk-Kul entered was created.
2. 5 identification keys with main ecosystems of Issyk-Kul province were developed (1. species, living in Issyk-Kul lake, 2. species of the deserts, 3. species of the steppes, 4. species of the subalpine and alpinemeadows, 5. species of the forests.
3. The brochure about Red Book types of Issyk kul area was developed.
4. The manual "Learning from nature" was developed.
5. The workshop on distribution of the information materials for representatives of the nature protection areas, general directorate of the "Yssyk-Kul" and journalists of Issyk kul area was held.
6. The workshop on biodiversity conservation for schools of Issyk kul area in Cholpon-At town (with participation of 30 schools) was held.
7. The workshop on biodiversity conservation for schools of Issyk kul area and Issyk kul state university in Karakol cityt was held.
8. The workshop on sustainable development and fundamentals of green economy for business and local authorities of Issyk kul area was held.
9. The specialized web-page about projects of the GEF SGP in Issyk-Kul was created/
10. 12 monthly digest about ecology of Issyk kul area and ways of preservation of a biodiversity within COMDEKS initiative were developed and released..
