Project Characteristics and Results

Replication of project activities

All nature protection teritories, involved in conservation of the snow leopard are now in close cooperation with the Snow leopard secretariate, and developed plans on improvement methods of monitoring and estimation of the snow leopard's populations size.

Gender Focus

Both women and men will equally involved into the project and take part in its training events.

Capacity - Building Component

Consultation of the specialists on biodiversity will be provided within the project. During 2 month 4 specialists will also provide technical assistance to the secretariate - specialist on fundraising, spacialist on communication, specialist on biodiversity and eduation, and the logistic.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Educational events within the project captured more then 10 000 representatives of local communities from different regions of Kyrgyzstan, who took part in actions on planting trees and improvement of eco-touristic infrastructure - in Kara-Shoro national park and other places.

Policy Influence

The project did a great job on prviding technical and expert support for working level secretariat on conservation of the Snow Leopard, that now serves thematic needs and ensures coordination with all 12 snow leopard range countries. Jointly with UNDP and other partners, SGP conducted first ever steering committee of the SL secretariat, that has bene re-branded as a global SL Secretariat, with more vested authorities and status.

Project sustainability

The project established a working body - snow leopard secretariate, which is very sucessfull in fandraising and generation of money for activities on protection of the snow leopard secretariate.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The project has a component on work with mass-media, that will ensure wide coverage of the results all over the country.

Notable Community Participation

The project has a copmonent o working with youth. New colorful cartoons about snow leopard protection will be developed and published for further distribution among schools of the Issyk-Kul province of Kyrgyzstan.

Planning non gef grant

The project has been continued in 2016 by partner - Snow Leopard Trust, NABU and others.

Policy Impact

The project supported the process of development and adoption of the Global Snow Leopard Ecosystem Protection Program and Bishkek Declaration on Protection of the snow leopard, and guaranteed participation of the local communities of Kyrgyzstan in all steps of the process.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

The project will produce a colourful poster about snow leopard in Russian and Kyrgyz language, and also the innovative video and cartoons for children.

Project Results

? Within this project the meeting of the steering Committee of the Global programme in March 2015 for the conservation of the snow leopard and its ecosystems, with the participation of high-level representatives was conducted (GEF SGP provided media support and logistics in cooperation with other partners.)
? In cooperation with local communities comprehensive support was provided to the ?Kara-Shoro? national park, where there is a population of snow leopard is living. Solar panel were purchased and installed at the guard house, that has improved working conditions of the guards during night period. There were no any electricity there before.

? A team of public guards was created from volunteers from local communities. A serial of ecological actions were organized in buffer zone of ?Kara-Shoro? national park, where trees were planted at the naked mountain slopes. That has improved conditions for population of the mountain goats (the food base of the snow leopard).
? 2 colorful posters (in Russian and Kyrgyz language) were developed and issued.
? Wide information campaign about snow leopard was organized in all regions of Kyrgyzstan.
