Emmergency intervention for saving the authoctonous sheep “Lara e Polisit”
Based on FAO criteria this authoctonous breed is ?critically endangered?. The present day population of this breed is estimated at about 400 ? 500 individuals spread in several villages in the region of Librazhd, Albania. The villages in this area still contain flocks of ?pure? individuals that can be used as bases for the genetic programe. The project will consist in:
1. Development of capacities of the farmers in the implementation of the in-situ conservation programme of the animals.
2. Support for the preservation in-situ in vivo as a genetic bank.
3.Creation of the gentic reserve of somatic cells in the national cryobank.
4.Support to the farmers for increasing their capacities for the production of traditional products from this breed and facilitating their access in the local markets
