THE RESTORATION OF THE NEW RIVER SPRING ON NEVIS TO SERVE FARMING COMMUNITIES IN THE NEW RIVER AREA.
This centuries old water source situated at New River has been a blessing to many crop and livestock farmers. However, during the rainy season this valuable resource becomes a problem to neighbouring villagers and the farmers themselves as a result of flooding. In the absence of a maintenance and management plan for water use from this historic water spring has additionally caused the removal of top soil leaving many areas in a denuded state rendering much of the land as unproductive. During the rainy season volumes of water will meander down the water course (ghaut side) and finally into the ocean due to the fact that the area is downward sloping.
List the objectives:
(i) Rehabilitate longstanding water source (natural spring) to increase water flow to farmers resulting in increased crop production
(ii) Capacity Development and Enhancement of sustainable livelihoods among community members
(iii) Training for Cooperative members during the last half of the project to include:
(a)Financial Management (book keeping)
(b)Record keeping (water main repairs and water distribution/ usage)
(c)Project Monitoring and Evaluation
(iv) Design and implement a Water Management and Maintenance Plan during the second half of the project implementation
