Datça-Bozburun Key Biodiversity Area (KBA) is one of the priority sites in Turkey owing to the biological diversity it hosts. Within this KBA, groups of endemic Datça date palm (Phoenix theophrasti) are found. There are actions specific to the conservation of Datça date palm present in the plans and programs of Forest Management Unit, District Agriculture Directorate and Directorate of Special Environmental Protection Areas. However, those actions should be put into practice through pilot studies, especially on mitigating major threats on Datça date palm, such as infestation by red palm weevil and road construction works.

The project aims to start the monitoring program of Datça date palm groups and establish a basis for the continuity of the monitoring program. First informative outputs will be produced in the project such as making and setting up of information boards near major palm date areas and preparation of information brochures to be used in neighboring regions of palm date areas. The public departments and communities will be brought together through meetings and gatherings in order to make decisions and cooperate for action towards implementation of conservation actions for Datça date palm.
