Reducing the carbon footprint of the Seychelles’ prisons through biogas, solar and rainwater harvesting initiatives
This proposal is to help the Seychelles Prison Services (SPS), situated at Montagne Posee, Au Cap to reduce its carbon footprint by reducing its consumption of electricity and treated water and increase the technical competences of inmates to deliver these services. The GEF funds will be used to extend an existing successful project to introduce green training programs for prison inmates. It focuses on improving the sustainability of the prison facilities in reducing greenhouse gases emission through reduction of reliance on electricity produced from burning fossil fuel.

At present the livestock farm provides milk and manure, the latter in a modest quantities and thus, outside sources are needed for fertilizers in the Vegetable and fruit farms. As an alternative the production of biogas has become an option which will have more impact on the running costs of the prison in its bid to be more sustainable. The project will also introduce solar panels to the female prison as they are currently boiling water on gas for required hot water. Rainwater harvesting will equally be introduced to the prison extension on Marie Louise island in order to cut down reliance in desalinated water produced using much electricity. Inmates will be trained in different aspects of renewable energy and this will form part of their on-going life skill development within the rehabilitation process.

Project Characteristics and Results
Capacity - Building Component
FoP faces a number of internal issues such impedes its ability to be a leader in civil society, at national level. And so the objective looks specifically at addressing these in order to strengthen FoP from within. Prison inmates will also be trained in gaining life skills and be trained in sustainable energy activities and consumption which will help in their rehabilitation process.
Gender Focus
The direct target group are the inmates, both males and female. The project will seek to have the involvement of both but it is known from the outset that there will be a lot less women inmate as a percentage of the inmate population. The higher number of men participating in the project will balance the significantly higher number of women who makes up the membership of Friends of Prison.
