Increasing farmers' income through integrated and sustainable efforts
Project goals or objective (including GEF problem area addressed by project) :
Short term objectives :
1. to increase farmers? income by cultivating bicolor buffaloes, which are unique to this area. as local potential sources to support ecotourism activities.
2. to increase farmers? skills in animal husbandry and integrated agriculture.
Long term objectives :
1. To improve farmers? agricultural pattern on agricultural entertainment, from subsistence farming to progressive farming system.
2. To use lands wisely as an effort to rehabilitate and preserve environment by intensifying agricultural efforts, including optimizing available lands without causing land degradation.
3. Preserve bicolor buffaloes as local variety cattle in Tana Toraja which supports local biodiversity wealth.
Activities to be carried out under project :
1. Training for local farmers to increase their skills on animal husbandry (maintenance and insemination process) and integrated farming;
2. Supplying 18 female buffaloes and 1 male bicolor bufallo (as a stud), as a seed project to breed more bicolors in captivity;
3. Building 6 stalls in 3 villages to cultivate bicolor buffaloes;
4. Carry out quarterly meetings between farmers groups to exchange experiences and monitor activities;
5. Invite national consultants to assist WALDA in developing further and related programmes such as ecotourism, distribution of potable water system, etc.
Project Participants and/or beneficiaries :
1. Three community groups from Piongan village (29 heads of household).
2. Two community groups from Nanggala village (25 heads of household).
3. Three community groups from Madandan village (16 heads of household).
4. WALDA Staff.
