Ngarauchebungel Conservation and Sustainable use of Medicinal Plants in Oikull
The main purpose of this project is to conserve and promote the sustainable use of medicinal plants unique to the village of Oikull on the southeast border of Airai State in Babeldaob.
Oikull has been identified in numerous studies to house a diverse array of medicinal plants including an extensive cultural knowledge in the multiple usages of these plants. However, the erosion of the cultural knowledge supporting the biodiversity of Oikull has become a serious concern as the elders pass away along with the cultural knowledge. Subsequently, for this project there is a concerted effort among the community members to identify, conserve, and promote the sustainable use of this cultural knowledge by increasing the understanding and awareness in both the conservation and the sustainable use of medicinal plants among the next generation of not only Oikull, Airai, but other interested communities in Palau. While the concentration will be on the medicinal properties of these plants, other usages such as food, construction, recreation, fishing, art, and hunting may be discussed
