The Introduction of Organic Farming in the production of vegetables in Belle Vue, Vieux Fort, Saint Lucia
This project was designed by a group of women in the Northern Hills of Vieux Fort, Saint Lucia. The women started with a desire to work with the local school children to ensure that they had safe food in the required quantities and types. With experience from this effort, they have now decided to graduate to a larger community project and thus move to a higher scale of operations.
The women wish to reduce the amount of toxic chemicals used in agriculture in their community and their detrimental impacts on the health of humans and the environment. The project goat is to: "transform agriculture in the community of Belle Vue into a more friendly and less harmful production system" and the objectives are to: "(i) establish a 3 acre organic farm which will create employment for 22 persons by March 2016; (ii) make available to the group and the community a variety of organic seedlings for backyard gardening by October 2015; (iii) make available to 50 homes in the community a variety of fresh organically grown foods for consumption between September 2015 and May 2016; and (iv) train 25 group members in capacity building and production of vegetables by March 2016".
The major project outcomes are a significant increase in awareness of chemical pollution and alternatives to agro-chemicals; and a larger percentage of publics are aware, are advocates and are taking positive action as collective stewards of the environment.
