Towards the establishment of a Multiple Use National Park as an integrated planning and management framework from ridge to reef and as a means of addressing soil erosion, reducing sewage pollution, practicing coral reef rehabilitation and the development and promotion of livelihoods in the community of Canaries, Saint Lucia.
This project was developed as a ridge to reef project to focus on land and water based sources of pollution as well as unsustainable land management. The ultimate goal is to establish a multiple use national park within which sustainable micro, small and medium enterprises are viable.
The project has seven objectives as follows: (i)? Tree planting and vetiver grass terracing at river bank sections with a high risk of bank failure during flood events to cover a minimum of 2 km of river bank in the lower reaches of the Canaries River valley before end of Feb 2016; (ii) Hold a demonstration workshop on terracing slopes to reduce slope failure and erosion strategies with a minimum of 10 farmers before end of 2015;l (iii) Fully costed feasibility study completed before end of February 2016 for installation of 2 community toilet blocks at both ends of Canaries Beach, to include renewable power source (solar) and an integrated processing unit for clean energy from waste facility; (iv) Demonstration coral nursery location defined and agreed between community and Ministry of Fisheries with associated No Fish Zone, with nursery infrastructure constructed within the community and laid in place and seeded with a minimum of 50 coral fingers by end of January 2016; (v) 4 PADI Open Water certified and Coral Garden basics training & accredited community members ready to manage coral nursery by end of 2015; (vi) Community based tourism product development and small business management training workshop for 15-20 community residents before end of February 2016; and (vii) Designation of Canaries Watershed as a multi-use national park by end of 2016.?
From inception it was determined that this project will have to be upscaled to ensure that all its objectives are met.
