The planning grant supported the feasibility study that sought to investigate options for processing seaweed with the aim of producing energy and contribute to seaweed disposal problems. Results have shown that the processing of seaweed through techniques (such as HTC and pyrolysis) reduces the amount of waste which needs to be disposed, which saves a large amount of carbon dioxide and methane emissions. It was noted that the char produced from the pyrolysis could be used for soil amendments or fertilising issues. The production of surplus energy (Hydrothermal carbonization -HTC process) saves carbon dioxide emissions and support the provision of green energy.
