Satafao Marine Conservation Area.
Overall Project Objective:
The Project aims at improving the current status of marine ecosystem and resources for sustainable livelihoods and Climate Change.
Specific Objectives, Outcomes and Outputs:
Objective 1: To ensure data availability on the marine biodiversity of the reserve to assist the development of sound management interventions;
Key Outcome 1: Information will become available for the locals to improve the management of the marine reserve and related resources.
Key Output 1: Survey Reports detailing status of the fisheries reserve (MPA) and associated resources. 3D Maps of the MPA will also be produced.
Key Output 1: 3D Maps of the MPA and associated habitats will provide additional information to assist ongoing management and monitoring.
Objective 2: Ensure sustainable management and conservation of inshore resources by establishing a marine protected area and strengthening our management plan rules and village bylaws.
Key Outcome 2: Improved abundance of inshore resources and sea food by restocking giant clams and other shellfish like trochus in our fish reserve and our reefs;
Key Output 2.1: Marine Protected Area (MPA) properly demarcated and Management Plan developed and implemented.
Key Output 2.2: Fishing By-Laws will be in place to forbid using illegal fishing and help control the use of resources in the reserve.
Key Output 2.3: The restocking of giant clams and other shellfish like trochus will improve status of inshore resources and sea food production in our village. The brood stocks will spawn naturally and rehabilitate our reef. Larger sizes will be sold to the local market thus increase income to our village families.
Objective 3: Increase capacity building and enhance skills/understanding within our village communities regarding fisheries management issues.
Key Outcome 3: People of Satafao will be well equipped to handle and manage their own reserve without reliance on the expertise from others.
Key Output 3.1: Trainings and awareness programmes will be solely taken care of by the village people. The knowledge will be passed from generation to generation.
Key Output 3.2: Awareness materials developed to assist researchers as well as the village people?s future generations in monitoring. Meanwhile, there will be a strong coordination between villages and communities which will become useful for the conservation efforts in Samoa.
Key Output 3.3: Awareness Materials developed and disseminated to schools, communities and the public at large.
Key Output 3.4: Sufficient human resource, housing of tools and equipments to facilitate the MPA Operations will be in place.
Key Output 3.5: Exchange visits amongst villagers with MPAs for experiences and lessons sharing.
The Project activities will be carefully carried out to deliver the THREE main objectives mentioned above.
Objective 1: To ensure data availability on the marine biodiversity of the reserve to assist the development of sound management interventions;
Key Activities: Conduct monitoring surveys to keep track of the status of marine biodiversity in the reserve. This can help visualize how much need is required for improvement and / or maintaining the natural richness of the marine reserve. Collect and compile this data for future preferences and for records in the history of the village. To exchange experiences and solutions to problems encountered in the reserves. Proper mapping of MPA required not only for barriers but for the habitats included indicating where marine resources are and what types are available.
Objective 2: Ensure sustainable management and conservation of inshore resources by establishing a marine protected area and strengthening our management plan rules and village bylaws.
Key Activities: Review existing Management Plan needed and by laws to incorporate changes as well as the restocking of marine species where needed. To ensure sustainable management and conservation techniques to strengthen the Management Plans and Village By-Laws. The restocking of giant clams and other shellfish like trochus will improve status of inshore resources and sea food production in our village. The brood stocks will spawn naturally and rehabilitate our reef. Larger sizes will be sold to the local market thus increase income to our village families. The fish reserve area remains as the breeding area for most inshore species. Both fish stock and catches are increased and abundance of healthy corals and other marine resources.
Objective 3: Increase capacity building and enhance skills/understanding within our village communities regarding fisheries management issues.
Key Activities: Trainings and workshops are required in this area for better understanding of the project and its importance in everyday life. What?s very important is the ability to uphold such developments to prolong its positive influence on the community. Community must take part in Biodiversity surveys at every level from the elders to the school children to build their technical capacity.
Produce awareness material to be developed and distributed.
