Youth Climate Action Network
Twelve villages in Samoa are represented by their youth representatives on the Youth Climate Action Network (YCAN). Youth from the villages of Iva, Gataivai, Puapua, Auala, and Matavai-Safune of Savaii and Vailoa-Faleata, Fausaga-Safata, Tanugamanono, Saoluafata, Faleseela Tai, Faleula, Motootua of Upolu.
YCAN initiative is a product of the South South Sub Regional Youth Initiaitve on Climate Change. Young people who were delegates of the initiaitive and is taking a step further. Post initiative the youth have gone back to their villages and have linked with experts whom they?ve met during the conference to help them facilitate how youth can contrlibute into tackling climate change threats within their own communities.
Overall the youth have assessed the issues within their villages environment and have come together to tackle issues related to environmental concerns within their villages. These issues are classified in these areas; waste management, rehabilitation of ecosystems such as degraded mangroves from intensive human activities and impacts of climate change, replanting of areas affected by intensive el nino effects, disempowered youth who have limited capacity on how to care for their environment.
From these issues, YCAN has classified its approach to holistically tackle these issues through the proposed solutions;
1. The management and conservation of biodiversity and ecosysytems, waste management initiaitives, promotion of clean energy and agro ecology
2. Advocate to foster environmental initiatives and influencing positive change in the environment policy arena and village based actions
3. Monitor and conduct capacity building initiaitives to stimulate interests from youth
