The Chief Tree Initiative - Connecting the Dots for Safe Farm to School Network for consumption of organic foods and reducing chronic non-communicable diseases/CNCDs in Saint Lucia.
This project will use children to help create a high national effective demand for organic foods as part of the school feeding programme. The goal is to "reduce the high levels of use of agro-chemicals by supporting the development of demand/markets for organic/chemical free foods?. The objectives are to: (i) build the capacity of 30 smallholder farmers (including women farmers) in alternative production systems for organic/chemical-free food by the 3rd project month; (ii) build the awareness/sensitivity and capacity of parents and pre-school teachers in good practices for encouraging healthy eating and lifestyles which can be introduced into schools; (iii) Undertake a rigorous research process which documents the life style changes and determines whether or not the transformation has occurred; and (iv) develop procurement/market linkages between producers/processors using the safe and nutritious chain concept and school meals programme/school canteens". Ultimately, this project will contribute to several OP 5 outcomes which include: ? Sustainable land management principles in use by communities as a means of protecting ecosystems services. ? Significant increase in awareness of chemical pollution and alternatives to agro-chemicals in use. ? A larger percentage of publics are aware, are advocates and are taking positive action as collective stewards of the environment.
