The Removal and Utilization of Sargassum from the East Coast of Saint Lucia to create organic compost for the farming industry.
This project will help to solve the negative impact of the build-up of sargassum seaweed on the East Coast of Saint Lucia, by using the invasive species to produce a liquid organic fertilizer and a compost organic fertilizer. The project objectives are to: "inform and educate the various communities about the origin and impacts of the sargassum seaweed and the opportunity to transform this invasive species into a business opportunity; (ii) establish a sustainable clean-up system for removal of sargassum seaweed from the Dennery village Bay to areas; (iii) establish a functioning and sustainable facility at Bosque d'Or Dennery to accommodate and process seaweed collected from Dennery and environs; and (iv) establish the competitive advantage of Sargassum over other products in the market". These objectives will contribute to the following CPS OP 5 outcome: Significant increase in awareness of chemical pollution and alternatives to agro-chemicals in use.

Project Characteristics and Results
Inovative Financial Mechanisms
Flyers as well as the development of a case study will be prepared by the grantee with the assistance of GEF SGP. As there are possible patents involved with the processing method, one will have to be strategic.
Replication of project activities
It will be very difficult to replicate this project, because the final product formulation is the intellectual property of one of the partners in the project. Whereas the collection, transportation and drying can be duplicated, the manufacturing of the Algas Plant Tonic will not be possible except through a period of experimentation, at the end of which there is no gurantee that the same formulation will be discovered, unless costly bio-engineering techniques are used.
