REAP Barbados - Secondary Schools

The project's ultimate goal is to change the eating habits and consumption patterns of youth and by extension, families and communities. In summary the objectives are to:
1. Engage a minimum of approximately 110 secondary school aged youth across 12 schools (1/parish with 2 in St. Michael) in practical learning about environmental protection and organic agriculture.
2. Engage a minimum of approximately 110 secondary school aged youth across 12 schools (1/parish with 2 in St. Michael) in exploring careers in agriculture and the environment and related fields.
3. Engage a minimum of approximately 110 secondary school aged youth across 12 schools (1/parish with 2 in St. Michael) in sustainable consumption by eating what they grow in various meals/products.
4. Implementing at least 3 capacity-building workshops for BAPPSS and stakeholders to sustain the program after the project has ended.

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

As the organisation lacks experiences in project management, they will engage with experts to assist with successfully implementing the project. This project will build the technical capacity of the group as it relates to agro-environmental management and would provide an avenue to strengthen board development and general management.

Project sustainability

Many of the linkages needed to ensure that the project continues have been developed to ensure sustainability. simple agreement was signed with the Barbados Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (BADMC) to continue to support REAP starting with the installation of drip irrigation. The agreement was officially signed 31 January, 2018. Additional linkages to the private sector for funding and in-kind support need to be developed more and need to be more coordinated and strategic. The BADMC has committed to installing the drip irrigation and supporting the installation of water tanks at schools after GEF SGP funding has ended. They have also committed to the service of Extension Officers as guest speakers at schools to continue the agricultural education. METI Education Officer for projects has asked that the program be expanded to more schools and to include special needs schools as well in the future. METI has committed to continuing to facilitate school and teacher participation. The Division of Youth has committed to continuing the program and to making its facilities available for various purposes including training workshops and events. The consultants have all committed to volunteering their services wherever possible to the project. The Ministry of Labour HRDS has committed to supporting the joint goals of REAP. Continued momentum and communication among teachers and principals will determine the long-term sustainability of the project. Funding from the private sector and other sources is also critical to long-term sustainability.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The Food Expo and Markey Day will allow schools to come together to exchange with each other and to share or sell produce, products and outputs from the project.

Notable Community Participation

The project focuses on engaging youth in hands-on experience in organic agriculture and sustainable consumption patterns.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project provides an opportunity for youth to generate income from the project?s activities and to develop skills that could be utilized during and after the project that would foster sustainable livelihoods development. Through national events such as Market Day students will generate revenue that will support such programmes beyond funding

Gender Focus

The project will seek to utilise both female and male agricultural experts to empower male and female youth in agriculture. Both men and women will equally benefit as they gain practical knowledge on proper farming techniques which will increase their productivity and self-sufficiency, allowing both the provide for their families and meet the nutritional needs.

Replication of project activities

To expand REAP to more secondary schools over time. Plans are already being implemented to work with each school on an individual basis to develop proposals for green and sustainable projects. Dialogue has already started with Erdiston Teacher?s Training College to positively impact the course on teaching for sustainability that is included in all Erdiston programmes. The vision is to have REAP in every school in Barbados so that transfer of teachers, principals and supporters in no way slows or halts the program from expanding the positive impacts on the environment and the future of Barbados? food security.

Project Results

On 19th May 2016 BAPPSS launched the project at Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth. Twenty-four Youth Commissioners have been sensitized in soil sample collection to lend support to Secondary school students.

Results:

30 adults trained in organic agripreneurship (20 females and 10 males) attending capacity-building
workshops

Agripreneurial educational materials shared during workshops and available online to all
participating schools

8 Adults (2 male and 6 female) trained in partnership strategies for building sustainability.

8 Adults (2 male and 6 female) trained in how to write a one-page proposal to access funding

BAPPSS leadership (6 male and 4 female principals) are now trained in the sustainable management
of the REAP project and in effective ways to lead educators as partners. These included the
President, Vice-President, Secretary and Floor Member assigned to REAP.

Environmental results

There have been increases in home gardens among youth and adults which generally reduces the
carbon footprint in the country. And a reduction in soil degradation.
? There has been an improvement in soil properties in some of the participating schools based on the
report from the agricultural consultant
? There has been an appreciation for the use of containers like tyres and half plastic cans for
different purposes. For example, to:
o Recycle these materials from ending up in the landfill
o Mitigate soil erosion and pollution by containing soil
o Using tyres for decorative plants more so than food crops to avoid leaching of harmful
materials into the food
