Biomass based enterprise to provide livelihood enhancement and energy security for tribal villages in Baripada cluster, Dhule, Maharashtra
Project Objectives:
1. Link community initiated forest conservation movement with commercially viable and environmentally sustainable biomass based enterprise- The project will demonstrate linking the forest conservation with appropriate market based mechanism. The project will ensure livelihood and energy security of the forest dwelling community. It will provide much needed income enhancement to the tribal community and physical comfort, though in limited manner.
2. Reduce health hazards of indoor pollution arising from traditional cooking practice, without hampering its advantages like keeping home warm in monsoon and winter and avoid increase in work load of women members for adoption new technology.
3. Set up commercially viable and environmentally sustainable biomass based enterprise, using forest conserved by Baripada village.
Project Activities:
1. Set up village level committee for enterprise development, management etc- A sub committee to look after all issues related to the energy unit and its governance. Financial arrangements will be set up at Gramsabha.
2. Biomass assessment: The village has been managing 1100 acres of dry deciduous forest. This will help the experts to develop biomass budget, in particular how much biomass can be sustainable harvested for energy enterprise.
3. Training of women on how to use improved pellet based stoves for cooking purpose.
4. Hands on training of pellet and briquette making to 5 youths from village. Training of basic and maintenance- Gangotree will provide training at its Pune facility. This training will be useful as the youths will run the unit in village.

Project Characteristics and Results
Gender Focus
Both men and women play a vital role in making the project successful leading to an enhanced income to 108 families in the village by training the youth for setting up a unit in the village and reducing the health hazards by providing women with an energy efficient cook stove. Setting up 10 women SHGs and linking them with banks to access credit. The technology will check burning of 150 MTs of paddy straw per year and recycling biomass from 1100 Acres of forest protection undertaken and will check emissions for 3300 MTs in 4/5 years. For doing so, the project will access 54% of the amount from GEF and rest co- financed from other sources.
Notable Community Participation
Organize people to undertake various activities to promote work in village and conservation of forest. Hands on training of pellet and briquette making will be provided to 5 youths of the village. Along with that they would further provide them training of basic repair and maintenance at their Pune, Maharashtra facility which will be beneficial for them to run the unit in the village. Women will be trained to increase their level of confidence to use the improved pellet based stoves for cooking purpose.
