Alternate practices to control and check biomass and crop residue burning in open field in Western Uttar Pradesh.

Project Objective:
1. To check the burning practice of sugarcane leaves and paddy waste instead provide the farmers with rich organic manure for improvement in field soil, human health and environment.
2. Generate interest of the farmers in adopting the farming techniques/ practices and gaining skills to influence fellow farmers.
3. Using cost effective innovative model for composting approved by Ministry of Agriculture, Department of Agriculture & Cooperation, Organic farming Cell, GoI.
Project Activities:

2. Construction of LR (Lalit- Raman) Compost pits & Filling the pits.
3. Establishment of Village knowledge Centre.
4. Preparation of Compost Pits.
5. Regular training and experience sharing meeting will be organized for promotion of organic farming and linkages.

Project Characteristics and Results

Policy Impact

A cost effective innovative model for composting approved by Ministry of Agriculture, Department of Agriculture & Cooperation, organic farming cell, GOI. Government schemes will be properly implemented in the region which will be useful in providing linkage with the rural banks. The learning?s will be shared with the concerned Government Departments.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

Awareness and skill development of the farmers by establishing knowledge centre (including library, panels, resource material, audio- visual aids etc. A brochure will be prepared and distributed among the farming community. Media plays an important role in sharing information even in the remote rural areas which will be useful for information dissemination.

Gender Focus

Both men and women will be equally involved in the process of project planning, execution and implementation. Forming of SHGs - informal institutions, linking to banks and ensuring regular monthly meetings will be done. The project will help them to save the expenses of buying chemicals as natural compost which will increase the soil quality and its growing power resulting in healthy crops. This will help to reduce the cost of the pit by at least 10-20%. Generating interest of the farmers in adopting the farming techniques/ practices and gaining skills to influence the fellow farmers.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Documentary will be shown to the farmers focusing on the problems of burning waste leaves, need of the environment, proposed solutions, methods and techniques of the pits as well as results of the manure used in the fields.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The beneficiaries are not indigenous community.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

To stop the burning practice of sugarcane leaves and paddy waste and instead provide the farmers with rich organic manure for improvement in field soil, human health and environment. The project will contribute towards keeping a check on CO2 emission. Farmers will be able to grow off- season vegetables along with that they will be provided with additional economic benefits by increasing the income of farmers and also providing them with proper market linkage. Farmers will be motivated to adopt organic farming practices in High Consumption of chemical fertilizers (190 kgs/hac); nearly 1700 farmers in 10 villages in 10,000 hac.

Capacity - Building Component

Training will be provided to the beneficiary farmers about the filling material for the pit. Experience sharing meetings will be organized on regular basis and promotion of organic farming with linkage will be done. One person will be trained for a VKC (Village knowledge Centre) linking the farming community with government and non- government schemes. Farmers will be provided with market linkage.

Notable Community Participation

Women (including young girls) and marginalized communities will be given priority in planning, execution and implementation of the project. 50 farmers will be engaged on pilot basis and will share the cost.

Project Results

? 50 LR compost pits developed at 50 different farmers field in Meerut there by producing 3,750 quintals of solid and 12,00,000 liters of liquid manure thus currently reducing 1600 MT of CO2 emission.
? These pits were filled with soil, cow dung, weeds and water. The liquid as well as the solid manure prepared with these pits are being used in the fields.
? About 300 acres of land undertaken for organic usage and climate proofing practices.
? Poly net house established at the Village Knowledge centre where farmers are even growing off season vegetable, flowers, medicinal and aromatic plants and relishing additional economic benefits.
? Partnered with Hindi Daily ?Gaon Connection? for 4 villages namely Khedki, Atrada, Khaspur and Fakarpur Kabatta, for better connection between residents and ongoing project. Trainings were conducted in all four villages to connect them better towards development in agriculture sector.
? The project model of LR compost pit was visited by Ms. Uma Bharti, Minister of Ganga Rejuvenation and River Development, GoI.
? The NGO developed an integrated Agro model at the research farm. The USP of this farm is zero percent wastage. It includes LR Compost pit model, Dairy plant, Gobar gas plant, Jaivik patio and three ponds.
