Community led livestock support systems for climate resilient agrarian livelihoods to reduce excess dependency on forest resourcesinUdainagar block of Dewas district, MP
Project Objectives:
1. To reduce animal mortality and morbidity by establishing as accessible and affordable animal health care system.
2. Reducing grazing on forest lands by livestock by promoting fodder cultivation and fodder trees.
3. To improve nutritional status of households by improved access to diverse protein sources.
4. To promote and strengthen a poultry production system based on local, indigenous varieties.
Project Activities:
1. Promotion of dual purpose crops will produce extra biomass of their livestock- Jowar, Bajra, millets etc. will 200 households.
2. Promotion of backyard Napier grass to ensure continuous availability of green fodder.
3. Multi purpose fodder plantation like drumstick, mulberry, anjan, saajad, as well as fruit trees like mango, lemon, jackfruit will be planted i.e. 20-25 trees for each interest, planted along the border of the field as well as on the barren land.
4. Azola, a special algae will provide low cost option to feed deshi poultry and for stall feeding of goats.
Project Outcome:
1. Ensuring green fodder availability for atleast 10 months annually to 500 households in the project villages.
2. Reduction in forest grazing 1 sq km of forests used annually for grazing of 29 animals.
3. 50 functional biogas units over 3 years in the project villages.
4. 400 households in the project area to have affordable access to vaccinated local chicks to keep their backyard poultry.

Project Characteristics and Results
Gender Focus
All the members of the organization are women (260 women SHG with 3300 women). Bank accounts will be opened for women and if needed by the family, the new assets to be procured on their name. Both men and women will be benefitted from the project by improving the nutritional status of households by providing them improved access to diverse protein sources. They will further work on removing health risks and improving productivity of livestock. 800 smokeless energy efficient cook stoves to be done with community 50 % participation.
Policy Impact
Numerous Government schemes will be leveraged, and the entire work will be in close collaboration with panchayats (local self government) and Government officials to provide space for possible advocacy with governments too. Demonstration and sharing of best practices at the village level amongst members. The technology may be used by the State departments in policy making.
