Towards Sustainable and Environment Friendly Charcoal Production in Yabad Cluster
Towards Sustainable and Environment Friendly Charcoal Production in Yabad Cluster
Charcoal production is ranked as one of the main economic sectors and coping mechanisms in West Jenin charcoal is well known at the national level in terms of high quality "Known as Yabad Charcoal after the name of the main locality in the cluster). The West Jenin Area Development Program "ADP" assessment in 2007 followed by the participatory appraisal of competitive advantage (PACA). The one ton of wood carbonization is known to pollute 700,000 m3 of air "Adam,2008). This means that West Jenin charcoal production pollutes 35 billion m3 of air annually. The main air pollutants from charcoal are CO, CO2, CH4,H2S, C2H6, CH3OH, H2S, SO4 (Basha, 2009). These gases are mixed with the dust generated from the burned hay and te sand used for covering the earth mounds and being found polluting not only the residential areas but also leaving dramatic impact on fauna and flora (including olive trees widely available in the area). Examples include the deterioration of the olive oil quality that implies drastic decrease in the olive oil prices produced in the area which adversely impacts the economic situation of land owners and their families.
