Establishment of energy willow seedbed to provide planting material for Zakarpattya region

The project?s main objective is to demonstrate the benefits of alternative energy for the communities of Zakarpattya region. It is done through planting of energy willow seedbed on the territory of 5 ha to support a closed-loop cycle production of alternative energy for heating and hot water supply.
The project?s practical tasks are:
? Create a pilot area for planting energy willow seedling. The project ensures planting, monitoring, control of growth and cutting of one-year willows.
? Submit a report about each stage of planting of energy willow.
? Conduct a research to analyze the soil in order to identify best areas of planting of energy willow seedlings.
? Conduct the information campaign to disseminate information on the use of energy willow.

Project Characteristics and Results

Gender Focus

Gender equality is a part of project policy and all parties participate in project activities on equal base and benefit from project results.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The establishment of energy willow seedbed helps local community to acquire a more sustainable lifestyle through the use of alternative energy. It has both environmental and cost-effective benefits for the community. In addition, the project ensures creation of 30 new jobs for local citizens.

Policy Impact

The project became a showcase that helped identify opportunities for energy crops cultivation and contributed to the formulation of Regional Biomass Programmes ? mid- and long-term regional energy policy documents in the pilot regions. At the national level, the project supported a vision that biomass planting is an important factor to be considered before large scale deployment of biomass for energy and heating. This is crucial for avoiding a time lag between the instantaneous release of CO2 from burning fuels and its eventual uptake as biomass, which can take a significant amount of time.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The project results and details are widely covered by the media, through partnership websites and especially through a newly established web resource of the project which facilitates promotion of alternative energy sources in Zakarpattya region.

Project Results

The achieved results of the project:
? A pilot 5 ha area for planting of 100 000 seedling of energy willow was chosen (Kvasovo village, Zakarpattya region). As a result the energy willow nursery was created. At the end of the first growing season the willow cuttings were cut back to approx. 10 cm above ground level (coppiced) to encourage the formation of multi-stemmed stools in the following growing season. A first year (technical) yield of energy willow was 58.5 t of dry matter per 5 ha that is equal to 955 GJ or 237 Gcal. The amount of GHG absorbed was 40 t CO2 equivalent per 5ha.
? A report about each stage of planting of energy willow was presented. The project information and results were posted on the web-resource www.blagoustriy.info.
? A research to analyze the soil in order to identify best areas of planting of energy willow seedlings was conducted.
? 1000 information brochures on the use of energy willow were developed and disseminated.
? The project team conducted a project presentation, two workshops on planting of energy willow, a roundtable discussion about issues and prospects of energy willow planting in Zakarparttya region.
? The web-resource, targeted at exchange of experience about alternative energy and involvement of communities in environmental management, was established.
