Establishment of Center for promotion of sustainable approaches to recovery of Eastern region of Ukraine

Eastern region of Ukraine was affected by the conflict that caused significant socio-economic and environmental damage of the area. The region needs sustainable recovery action plan and mechanisms of its implementation as well as pilot projects promoting the best practices of sustainable developments in Eastern region of Ukraine. The project aims to establish Center for Promotion of Sustainable Approaches to Recovery of Eastern Region of Ukraine that helps to restore damaged areas of Ukraine in accordance with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The project?s objectives are: implement pilot projects to improve environment in the East of Ukraine and create new jobs for the local community; conduct information campaign, including trainings, workshops and round table discussions for different target audiences with participation of recognized professionals; develop basin river recovery plan for Siversky Donets; establish advisory group of experts to provide consultations to the local community on energy-saving practices and opportunities to start a business; establish social institutions to ensure gender equality and life-long learning practices.

Project Characteristics and Results

Gender Focus

Gender equality is a part of project policy and all parties participate in project activities on equal base and benefit from project results.

Capacity - Building Component

The project conducts trainings for various target groups which in long-term perspective will give them mechanisms and ways to lead a sustainable lifestyle and share knowledge.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The project has a strong focus on raising public awareness on a variety of issues, including development and distribution of brochures on sustainable development practices, organization of study tours to facilities that support such practices. Also, round tables and trainings for different target groups are organized. It is important to mention that the group of volunteers worked in the framework of the project to conduct an information campaign to promote Education for Sustainable Development.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The restoration activities of the project are directly in line with SDGs. Also, it introduces new jobs that significantly influence the socio-economic infrastructure of the region.

Project Results

Establishment of the Center for Promotion of Sustainable Approaches to Recovery of the Eastern Region of Ukraine in Slovyansk city (Donetsk region) in the short and long term provided the following results:
1. Pilot projects were implemented to improve the state of the environment and create new jobs in the settlements affected by the war.
2. Information campaigns (trainings, seminars, round tables) for various target groups with the involvement of leading specialists and experts on working with international projects were conducted.
3. Proposals for the basin river rehabilitation program were prepared for Siversky Donets.
4. The work of a mobile consulting center was organized, which worked in different cities to provide citizens with information on city and state programs to support energy saving, opportunities to start their own small business.
5. Support is provided in the establishment and functioning of social institutions to ensure gender equality and empowerment of all women and girls and quality education to encourage the lifelong learning for all (University of the Third Age, Club "Business women of Donbass").
