Recultivation of lands affected by illegal extraction of natural resources on significant biodiversity areas

Due to illegal mining of amber in Polissya region of Ukraine serious environment damage was made to the area, including deep damage of soil surface, forest ecosystem and significant biodiversity losses. The project rehabilitates the affected lands and implements measures to prevent further illegal mining. It is achieved through the implementation of the following activities: - recultivate lands damaged by amber mining; - conduct academic and promotional campaign to raise public awareness on the environment of Polissya region and involve the community into renovation works; - promote changes to legislation in terms of sustainable development. Therefore, the project focuses on practical activities, information dissemination combined with advocacy practices to promote new laws and regulations.

Project Characteristics and Results

Policy Impact

A draft Law of Ukraine "On Amendments to the Legislation of Ukraine (Regarding Reclamation of Disturbed Lands in Mining and Exploration Works)" was developed.

Gender Focus

Gender equality is a part of project policy and all parties participate in project activities on equal base and benefit from project results.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

One of the project components includes information campaign to draw public attention to a range of issues: nature protection, amber mining, rare plants and animals of the region. The project team developed brochures and printed materials to distribute among different target audiences. Also, a round table discussion and information meetings to discuss revegetation of the damaged lands were held.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The economic component of the project is achieved through the development of guidelines for calculating environmental damage from amber mining to further recover from the owners of disturbed land, increase the tourist attractiveness of the region, develop a business plan for sustainable use and create new jobs to prevent degradation of lands in the southern and eastern regions of Ukraine.

Project Results

The achieved results of the project:
1. The forest area damaged due to illegal amber mining was restored (Zhytomyr region, Olevsk district, Yurove forestry). A total of 3 hectares of degraded land was restored.
2. Experts created a business plan for sustainable use of nature and job creation in the region.
3. To inform the local population, public authorities, scientists and the public about the implementation of the project, its purpose and objectives, on July 5, 2016 a round table "Restoration of areas damaged by illegal amber mining" was organized. Three information meetings were also organized for local communities in Olevsk, Yurove, Rudnya-Zamyslovetska on economic and environmental losses of illegal mining. During these events, specially developed printed materials of informational nature were distributed.
4. Methodological recommendations were developed for calculating the damage caused to the environment due to amber mining for further recovery from the owners of disturbed land plots.
5. Proposals were made to the Ukrainian legislation in the field of mineral use.
