Ukrainian steppe zone rehabilitation for the benefit of local communities
The project aims to protect and restore biodiversity on Ukrainian steppe landscape with chalk extraction in Lugansk and Donetsk regions for sustainable development and benefits for local communities. The project achieves its objectives through implementation of the following activities: conduct scientific expeditions to provide comprehensive ecological baseline analysis of steppe landscape in Lugansk and Donetsk regions and statistics on distribution of rare steppe flora and fauna populations; conduct scientific research and provide baseline analysis to identify the main threats for the landscape caused by local population, develop recommendations and disseminate among all target groups; decrease a number of steppe fires through introduction of preventive measures on 5 ha of Protected Area "Striletskyi steppe"; restore 8 ha of protected areas by liquidation of invasive species of plants; promote steppe conservation and restoration among local communities through wide information campaign.

The project contributes to the sustainable livelihoods and safety of communities by decreasing number of fires through introduction of preventive measures and putting into operation equipment for fires extinguishing.
