Traditional resources management practices for coconut crabs on Pulo Anna Island improved to reduce the island vulnerability to climate change impacts on local produce and improve biodiversity through increased community awareness and involvement in habitat management
The primary objective of this project is to improve the livelihood of the Pulo Anna Island community through the improved management of coconut crabs Bigrus latro which will hopefully lead to an increase in the natural population.
Birgus latro is listed as an endangered species on the IUCN red list but with data deficient. More information is needed on this species in general. It is also a very marketable product and improvement of management will lead to increase for its high value market in Koror. The option may lead to increased presence.
The project will push to instill sustainable harvesting practices for the island, identify high value areas and promote limited take, and possibly incorporate No Take or No Entry zones.
