Strategic Environmental Protection for Economic Improvement.

The goal of the project is to conserve and reduce the rates of environmental degradation in Niamina East District stemming from forest degradation through appropriate usage and management of forest resources specifically through sustainable forest management and promoting the use of energy saving stoves among households. The project will target households in addressing forest degradation stemming from fuel wood collection by promoting the use of energy saving cooking stoves. The stoves will also address issues of indoor pollution among women and children, reduce household energy costs and time savings on meal preparations. The project will also directly contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions at the community level and create awareness of global warming and climate change.

Project Characteristics and Results

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

31 Village Development Committees (VDCs) within the target area have been consulted in the development of the project. As well, in the implementation, the VDCs shall be involved in its implementation.

Notable Community Participation

Alkamba Association is basically made up of young ladies and gentlemen from Kudang, Niamina East. With this project, the Association aims at raising community awareness on Climate Change of about 1000 people of which over 50% will comprise the youth. Also, the transportation and distribution of energy saving stoves shall predominantly be done by the Youth in that community.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Awareness campaigns, Periodic project consultative meetings, issue of progress reports, project newsletters and briefings are the ways and means in which the project envisages to communicate with its beneficiaries.

Capacity - Building Component

Capacity gaps in the area of climate change awareness was identified during project development. As a result, the project aims at raising awareness on climate change by sensitizing the target beneficiaries, setting up of Forest Management Committees and providing adequate training on Forest management.

Linkages gef projects

Currently, there are no FSP projects in this area, but there are a number of discussions at the national level in the area of energy specificall domestic household energy.

Replication of project activities

It is hoped that the project activities will be replicated elsewhere once the objectives have been satisfactorily met.

Project sustainability

Local blacksmith and pottery artisans have been trained on the production techniques of energy saving cook stoves. Based on local demands, they will be able to produce enough to meet them.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

Project outcomes will be developed into write ups, fact sheets to be disseminated among the general public.

Gender Focus

Since one of the major activities of the project is to provide energy saving stoves for households which are predominantly used by women, women in this project are therefore the main target beneficiaries. However, to counter the imbalance, men shall be included in the Forest Management Committee planned to be set up.

Policy Impact

The project aims to reduce GHG emissions through the use of energy-saving stoves among selected households in the village. The outcome will influence local and national policies in the areas of climate change, land degradation and forest management.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

There are income generating activities planned to be implemented once the Makunyama Forest is restored. These would go a long way in improving the socio-economic status of the beneficiaries.

Policy Influence

This project seeks to directly influence the formulation of national policy on energy by specifically addressing the issue of local technologies in promoting energy efficiency.

Project Results

? 1 sensitization workshop with 1,500 participants from the beneficiary communities on the objectives and activities of the project was conducted in Kudang.The workshop outlined the expected project outputs and outcomes and agreed on the role and responsibility of each stakeholder.The implementation schedule was also discussed and agreed upon.
? A capacity building workshop was conducted for 24 beneficiaries on Forest Management principles and practices.The workshop was in preparation for the planned activities of the village community forest reserve which was in need of rehabilitation in some parts that were subjected to logging and other illegal acts.
? Another capacity building workshop was conducted for20 members of the beneficiary communities on Tree Nursery Management.The topics included on when to collect ripe seeds of the different trees, how to store them, propagation techniques for seedlings, care of seedlings, transplanting techniques and monitoring.
? The village Community Forest Scout brigade was revitalized and tasked with the responsibility of protecting the forest reserve through patrolling and surveillance activities.
o To facilitate their mobility, 5 bicycles were procured for Forest Scouts.
? Constructed and distributed 500 energy saving improved cook stoves stoves which were distributed among 500 households in the village. Prior to their distribution, a sensitization campaign was conducted in the village on the benefits of using improved cook stoves, care and maintenance and record keeping.
? Contracted a local forester to raise 25, 000 seedlings of different tree species for planting in the community forest reserve of the village.

- A household survey was conducted for the 500 households supplied with the energy saving cook stoves to find out the level of satisfaction, cost savings in terms of fuel wood consumption and other parameters.
